Discovering the Spanish Medical System: Our Journey from Canada to Spain

Enso Team Realty

When we decided to relocate from Canada to the sun-soaked shores of Malaga, Spain, we knew there would be many changes and new experiences. One of the most pleasant surprises we encountered was the quality and affordability of the Spanish medical system, particularly private medical care.

In Canada, we were accustomed to long wait times and the high cost of healthcare. Unlike in Spain, private medical care is not available in Canada, meaning residents often face lengthy waits for specialist appointments and procedures. Upon our arrival in Spain, we quickly discovered that the situation here is quite different. The quality of medical care in Spain is exceptional, and the accessibility is even more impressive.

Spanish Medical System

It's no secret that Spain ranks among the top 10 countries with the best healthcare. The country boasts the highest number of public medical facilities. The main advantage is accessibility, with clinics equipped with the latest technology found not only in major cities but also in provinces.

Most hospitals in Spain are public, with only 15% being private clinics. Citizens of the country and foreigners who have obtained residency in Spain are entitled to free medical services. The simplest way to obtain residency is to participate in an investment program for foreigners (such as purchasing real estate or government bonds). The minimum investment amount is €500,000.

Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS)

Spain has a universal healthcare system, known as the Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS). Here's what you need to know about it:

  • Universal Coverage: The SNS provides healthcare coverage to all residents of Spain, regardless of their nationality or legal status.
  • Funding: The SNS is primarily funded through general taxation, with both the central government and the regional governments contributing to its financing.
  • Cost: Patients typically do not have to pay out-of-pocket for most healthcare services, although there may be co-payments for certain prescription medications and non-urgent healthcare services.
  • Facilities: The SNS includes a network of healthcare facilities, including hospitals, health centers, and specialized clinics, distributed throughout the country.
  • Professionals: The SNS employs a variety of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.

Efficient and Accessible Private Care

For specialized medical aid—such as a dentist or mental healthcare professional—private health insurance is a better option in Spain. Before choosing an insurance plan, it's wise to compare what different companies are offering, considering your needs and budget. Also, check out the reputation of the insurance company and read customer reviews.

The cost of private health insurance in Spain varies depending on the level of coverage you choose and your age. Basic plans start at around 50 euros per month, while more comprehensive options can cost several hundred euros. In Spain, private medical care is not just for the wealthy; it’s a viable and affordable option for many. The cost of visiting a specialist is much lower than what we experienced in Canada, and there are various insurance options that make private healthcare even more accessible.
In our personal experience, we witnessed how dental services that were quoted at $8,000 in Canada amounted to just 2,000 euros in Malaga, Spain.

Benefits of Spanish Health Care

Let's explore why healthcare in Spain is so attractive for expats:

  1. Universal Healthcare Access: In Spain, healthcare is considered a right, not a privilege. This means that everyone living in the country, including foreigners, has the right to access quality medical services.
  2. Quality Healthcare: The Spanish healthcare system is characterized by high-quality medical care. Medical facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and medical personnel are highly qualified.
  3. Low Costs: The cost of medical services in Spain is relatively low compared to other developed countries. This is important for many foreigners, especially those accustomed to high healthcare expenses in Canada and the USA.
  4. Wide Range of Medical Services: Spain offers a wide range of medical services, including primary care, specialized medical care, emergency care, psychiatric care, and more.
  5. Integration of Medical Services: The Spanish healthcare system is well-integrated, ensuring patients easy access to various types of medical care and coordination among specialists.

Comparative Insights: USA, Canada, and Spain

  • USA: Medical care in the USA is often considered one of the most expensive in the world. The country has a complex healthcare system with high costs for medical procedures, hospital stays, and medications. Typically, medical insurance is required, which can be costly, especially for comprehensive coverage. Individual health insurance premiums vary widely based on factors like age, location, and plan type. Generally, monthly premiums for bronze plans range from $350 to $500, while platinum plans can cost $650 to $900 per month. Young adults might pay as little as $150 for a bronze plan, while older adults could pay up to $900 for a platinum plan.
  • Canada: Canada has a publicly funded healthcare system, meaning most basic medical services are paid for through taxes. However, Canadians may have to pay out-of-pocket or through private insurance for certain services such as dental care, prescription drugs, and eyeglasses. Notably, private medical care is not available in Canada, which often leads to long wait times for specialist care and certain procedures.
  • Spain: Spain also has a publicly funded healthcare system providing universal coverage to residents and citizens. The cost of medical care in Spain is generally lower than in the USA, with lower expenses for medical services. Private health insurance is available for those who desire additional coverage or quick access to certain treatments.
